2011 has been a year of great change for us. We set out to close Cypher13, our small but renown design studio – and did so. The studio had run its course.

We sought to create a new studio. A studio that would uphold heightened levels of accountability, more comprehensive and transparent social and environmental performance standards – a studio that could serve as a model sustainable business, and then to put our names on it.

Berger & Föhr is a Certified B Corporation and a 1% for the Planet Member. The studio provides design and direction for entities and individuals in possession of socially equitable information, ideas and assets.

Enduring these changes has not been easy, but the commitment has been a simple one – simple, because we know it to be just and honest and true.

We have chosen to pursue quality in all things – over quantity. This choice more than any other has come to define our craft and those with whom we wish to partner and to serve. We have chosen objectivity over subjectivity, accountability over bureaucracy, and personal responsibility over ambiguity.

In this year, more than any prior – we have learned to trust our instincts and to do what we believe to be right in order to realize our full potential, to inspire others to do the same, and to be the change we want to see.

Henrique Oliveira is a Brazilian contemporary artist. In February 2011, Oliveira spent three weeks in Boulder, Colorado creating a large, site-specific installation for BMOCA. The installation was comprised of reclaimed materials brought from his home town of São Paulo. It was produced with the assistance of fellow Brazilian artist Francisco “Chico” Togni. In addition to this installation a selection of complimentary paintings and sketches were presented.

Although many installation artists today produce work that reaches far outside the established bounds of both painting and sculpture, the work of young Brazilian artist Henrique Oliveira seems to be almost without peer.

James Surls is an accomplished East Texas born artist living and producing work in Colorado's Roaring Fork Valley.

As reminders of the temporal nature of life, Surls’ works seem anxiously suspended between spirituality and doubt, balance and chaos. Associations occur across and between symbols, functioning more like a dream remembered. By and large, the pieces betray a penetrating and evolving awareness of the way natural forms impinge upon each other and upon us.

Mono no aware, literally "the pathos of things", also translated as "an empathy toward things," or "a sensitivity to ephemera," is a Japanese term used to describe the awareness of impermanence. In Japan the cherry blossom often serves as a metaphor for the ephemeral nature of life, and is considered to embody the concept of mono no aware.

Mono no aware was screen printed in an edition of 13 for Super Ordinary Gallery's Earthquake and Tsunami Relief Poster Show. All proceeds were donated to the Red Cross.

Title and exhibition graphics design for the sister exhibitions, "What is Modern?" and "Olivetti: Innovation and Identity." For "What is Modern?" the title design resulted in the creation of an original typeface based on the famed Bodoni designed by Giovanni Battista (Giambattista) Bodoni in 1798.

What Is Modern? features imaginative furniture, industrial, and graphic designs that span more than 200 years, from the early 1800s to the present day. The objects—representing a trajectory of innovative thinking and a variety of methods, materials, and concepts—explore the ways in which design has expressed the modern experience.

Olivetti: Innovation and Identity showcases the Italian company's groundbreaking approach to product design and promotion. After World War II, Olivetti's quality office machines and distinctive advertising graphics helped establish Italy’s reputation as the cradle of modern design. The company's graphic designers, architects, artists, writers, and advertising experts took an active part in the design of not only the company’s products and advertisements, but also the visual appearance of its showrooms and corporate architecture.
